AFRICAN SAINTS OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH
Throughout the Bible, reference is made and information provided about many nations and peoples. Many of the people who are highlighted in the Scriptures are black people, African people. The presence of these people of color and their contribution to Christianity throughout history helps African-Americans, and all people, appreciate God's word, and helps them understand that the Bible is written and meant for all people. Below are examples of many African saints, some of who appear in the Bible who, through example and teachings, helped spread God's word and Christianity throughout Africa and the world.
St. Mark, Apostle and Evangelist
St. Cyprian, African Bishop of Carthage
The Martyric Mothers: Sts. Perpetua and Felicity
The Holy Hieromartyr Cyprian and the Virgin Martyr Justina
St. Anthony the Great
St. Isaac of Fayoum
St. Pachomius
St. Maurice and the 6600 Martyrs of the Theban Legion
Holy Confessor and Passion-Bearer Verena, Companion of the Theban Legion
St. Katherine of Alexandria
St. Moses the Black
St. Mary of Egypt
St. Theodora of Alexandria
We hope that reading about these saints and martyrs, and learning about others, will help give African-Americans a sense of identity, but more importantly, a recognition that regardless of various peoples' contribution to the Church, Christianity is not black, or white, or yellow, but is a personal journey of salvation for every individual.
